In September of 2013, Long Museum will launch its international exhibition debut since its opening named “Clues of Asia—Asian Contemporary Art from Long Collection”. Upheld the Museum’s criteria for collection, research, promotion and value construction, the exhibition will present Long’s unique Asia contemporary art collection in a brand new perspective. Curated by the independent curator and critic Huang Du, it focuses on about thirty artists from countries of Japan, Korea, Indonesian and Malaysian and exhibits forty artworks include painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation, etc. “Clues of Asia” is aimed to think and represent features and trends of Asian contemporary art in the robust developing process of modernization and to reflect the diverse perspectives on envision and creation of artists within the geographical area so as to reveal the hidden topics behind these visual images in relation to different societies, customs, traditions, realities, routines and contexts of languages as well as to exploit varied coexisting status of the ongoing Asian art.

Taking the historic view on art communication between China and abroad in previous experiences, China considered less on art issues in Asian area compared with that of Europe and America, especially on the internal comparison and study of art phenomenon within Asia. Therefore, it is necessary to survey Asian contemporary art by placing it in the connection of historic context and realistic development in order to recognize its international uniqueness. In this sense, Long Museum’s international exhibition chooses Asia as its very beginning indicates both its genes of Asian contemporary art and self-consciousness of Asian culture. However, “Clues of Asia” is simply not the destination but a departure. It is one of the essential purposes for Long Museum to find out an inner ‘clue’ revealed by the collection and accordingly turn on the critical moment and dimension of China’s research on the Asian contemporary art.

In terms of exhibiting forms, “Clues of Asia” is basically a visual retrieval of Asian contemporary art resources among which younger artists are in the majority. It displays the richness and variety of Asian contemporary art in sharp individual styles as well as its creative vitality.

Besides the late artists Zenzaburo Kojima and Kazuo Shiraga, representative Japanese artists in this exhibition are: Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, Masaru Shichinohe, Hiroto Kitagawa, Tomoko Konoike, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Meiro Koizumi, etc. This new-generation artists get rids of the impacts by history and culture by means of confronting directly the connection with popular Anime culture especially the Japanese popular culture in the age of high consumption and almost bring this sort of aesthetics to its fullest play.

The exhibited Korean artworks imply the constantly close relation between Korean art and its own traditional culture, which is immersed with temple culture and traditional aesthetics. These Artists translate and refine these aesthetic elements into a new art language which is full of poetic flavor. The main exhibited artists are: Bae Bien-U, Kim Dong-Yoo, Cho Jung-Wha, Goh Geun-Ho, Bahk Seon-Ghi, Lee Byung-Ho, Kwon Ki-Soo, Jung Yeon-Doo, etc.

Meanwhile, Long Museum also attaches sufficient importance and concern to the trends of contemporary art in Taiwan and Southeastern Asia represented mainly by Indonesia and Malaysia. The Taiwanese art features in a new and distinguished pattern of cultural phenomenon resulted from the multicultural interlacement which is full of vitality and fresh glamour. Whereas the development and status quo of contemporary art in Southeastern Asia present the cultural characteristics of locality, globalization and diversification as well as the idiosyncratic uniqueness and variety in both aspects of richness of ideas, comprehensiveness of materials, technology and forms, as well as the expression methods in artistic languages and conceptions. The main exhibited Taiwanese artists are: Lu Hsien-Ming, Chiu Ya-tsai, Yang Mao-lin, Shih Yung-Chun, etc. Artists of Southeastern Asia include Affandi, Saftari and Dadang Christanto from Indonesia and Ahmad Zakii Anwar from Malaysia, etc.

The exhibition will last from 8th September to 27th October, 2013 and during which, three permanent exhibitions “Chinese Traditional Art from Long Collection”, “Revolutionary Art since the Yan’an Era” and “New Art History from Long Collection (modern part)” will be open to the public at the same time.

preface

The exhibition named “Clues of Asia” showcases a unique Asian contemporary art collection of Long Museum. With the expectation of establishing an imagination space and a new way of communication that beyond nations and political structures, it is assumed to construct the spectrum of Asian contemporary art in a fresh perspective. In the limelight of diverse viewpoints on envision and creation of artists from countries of Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan of China, this exhibition is aimed to think and represent features and trends of Asian contemporary art in the robust developing process of modernization and to reveal the hidden topics behind these visual images in relation to different societies, customs, traditions, realities, routines and contexts of languages respectively. The exhibition, in the name of Asia, is trying to create a discourse corresponding to Asian art rather than showing the overall appearance of Asian contemporary art. Not only manifesting Long’s awareness of exploiting Neo-Asia in global context, it also demonstrates the museum’s cultural identity and confidence in Asian art. Meanwhile, it reflects the development potential and energy of contemporary Asia as well as the imagination and creativity of Asian artists and is precisely the art altitude and cultural strategy of Long Museum.

Rather than a destination, “Clues of Asia” is simply a departure which is in accordance with the Museum’s criteria for collection, research, promotion and value construction. Taking the historic view on art communication between China and abroad in previous experiences, China considered less on art issues in Asian area compared with that of Europe and America, especially on the internal comparison and study of art phenomenon within Asia. And therefore, it is necessary to survey Asian contemporary art by placing it in the connection of historic context and realistic development in order to recognize its international uniqueness. In this sense, Long Museum’s Asian contemporary art collection realizes its due function and significance by appearing genes of Asian contemporary art and self-consciousness of Asian culture. It is therefore the essential meaning of this “Clues of Asia” exhibition that turning on the critical moment and dimension of China’s research on the Asian contemporary art.

In terms of exhibiting forms, “Clues of Asia” is basically a visual resource retrieval of Asian contemporary art, which reveals aesthetic connotation related to societies, routines, realities, traditions and contexts of languages through interpretation of the conceptions, languages and forms of the artists’ artworks. The exhibition exploits various coexisting status of the ongoing Asian art and provides valuable art clues at the same time. If artworks are visual forms which present artists’ concept and ideal, art collection thus should be carding and integration of all kinds of art tendency or phenomenon. As a consequence, it is of vital realistic significance to host “Clues of Asia” with the purpose to construct culture and art communication and dialogues within the scope of Asia. This collection exhibition inspiringly shows the richness and variety of Asian contemporary art in sharp individual styles as well as its creative vitality.
