The solo exhibition Darker than Darkness, Death beyond Death, Fire Burning Fire, Walking Down along the Stairway by Chen Xiaoyun will be opened on Sep 7th, 2013 at ShanghART Beijing. It will display the latest videos and photographs from the artist.
Aside from continuous poetic rhythm, Chen Xiaoyun's new video works similarly reveal puzzled and absurd images strengthening the ferment narration. The artist considers characters and languages likewise as image experiences. The most recent series of photographs quietly fits the general tone of the exhibition, which represents a solemn and gradual beauty, moments of decay and darkness as well as a micro reality. Chen Xiaoyun’s visual experiences are full of absurdity, metaphors and interior monologues. The emotional expressions show not only a vent of the artist’s inner world, but also a strong anxiety towards the outside world.
Chen Xiaoyun (1971) was born in Hubei province. Since his participation in the group exhibition 'Art for Sale' held in Shanghai in 1999, he started his contemporary art creation and practice in video art, and has become one of the most important experimental artists in the most recent decade. His recent solo exhibitions include: “Zhuiku Tablet” Annotation-CHEN xiaoyun Solo Exhibition, ShanghART Beijing, Beijing (2012); Why Life, ShanghART Beijng, Beijing (2010); Emerald Tablet, ShanghART H-Space, Shanghai (2009);Faint, MC, Los Angeles, U.S.A. 陈晓云个展《黑更黑，死更死，火更火，拾阶而下》于2013年9月7日在香格纳北京开幕。此次展览将为观众展示其最新创作的一系列录像和摄影作品。
在陈晓云最新的录像创作中除了延续以往诗性的影像节奏，图像的错愕和荒诞感，更加强化了对叙事性的发酵，对陈晓云来说文字和语言也是图像体验。最新的一系列摄影作品暗合着展览的整体基调，凝重和迟缓的美；衰败和黑暗的瞬间以及微观的现实。在贯穿陈晓云的荒诞，暗喻，内心独白式的视觉经验中，情绪性的表达不仅仅是艺术家对个人内在世界的宣泄也关乎对外在世界强烈的焦虑。
