Tang Contemporary Art is proud to present Place Libre a solo exhibition of Michael Lin, September 14, 2013. This is the gallery’s second collaboration with Lin after Surplus Value in 2006.
Michael Lin has been living and working in Shanghai, Taipei and Brussels.
From his first solo exhibition: Interior, held at IT Park in Taipei in 1996 to the series of his most well known traditional Taiwanese textile prints, Lin’s work has been an exploration of transitions, within which visual and spatial memories forms cultural identity and interpersonal relations. His series of traditional patterns in large-scale installation, while seemingly a public spectacle, are in fact intimate collective memories made public. In recent years, Lin practice has turn toward open-ended collaboration with local residents and communities without an assured result in its visual and spatial forms. Lin’s Model Home exhibition held at Rock Bund Art Museum in 2012 was a case in point.
Place Libre is a continuation of this thread, aiming to collaborate with the specific local context of Beijing. Tang Contemporary Art will be transformed from the gallery context to that of the local context. The proposed intervention governed only by chance will change on a daily bases. A step-by-step documentation of the unfolding event will be published at the end of the exhibition period.
Lin’s Place Libre project re-creates a heterotopic image of a marginal space, by diverting the functionality of space to inquire into the relational aesthetics advocated by Nicolas Bourriaud. It proposes to build a model and situation with social properties by way participation, setting up multiple perspectives of interpersonal relations that communicate social realities.
当代唐人艺术中心将于2013年9月14日隆重推出艺术家林明弘 (Michael LIN)的全新个展计划“空位”，此次展览亦是继2006年以来林明弘在北京唐人 “剩余价值”展览之后与当代唐人艺术中心的再度合作。
林明弘长期生活和工作在上海，台北和布鲁塞尔。
从1994年在伊通公园的首次个展“室内”到近年来最广为人知的以台湾传统花布为视觉主线的系列作品，林明弘的作品一直所要探讨的是对于空间（Space）与场所（Place）之间的身份性的转换以及由视觉或是空间感受所带来的身体记忆对于文化认同或是人际关系的影响。他最令人熟知的“阿嬷的花布”系列作品是将传统的台湾艳俗花布图案放大绘制于展示空间，铺天盖地将具有强烈视觉效果的花纹绘满空间，并放置一些抱枕邀请观众与之互动。艺术家挪用花布图腾这一种居家的具有私密属性的生活记忆通过艺术展览转换为公开的场所装置，塑造了一种既私密又公开的空间，让互不相识的陌生观众可以很快进入到亲和的人际互动之中。近年来林明弘在此基础上进行了新的尝试，即将本地居民、团体纳入到展览中，使作品在视觉和空间形态以外，更是一种无法控制结果的共同创作模式。2012年在上海外滩美术馆举办的“样板屋”正是这种尝试的体现。
此次“空位”计划将依然延续这种模式，这个展览为艺术家、公众以及展览的地域性群体提出一个共同参与的合作机会。介时林明弘将对当代唐人艺术中心的北京空间进行一系列改造，赋予传统的展览主空间全新的属性和用途。展览将废黜传统观看的模式，邀请有需求的群众通过和画廊工作人员互动完成达到目的角色；每日展览的参与者都不尽相同，因而画廊空间每日都会呈现出不同的视觉化效果。临时性的概念在这个展览中被视觉化的呈现出来，整个计划成为一个随着时间而一步步展开的进程。
林明弘此次的“空位”计划再现了一个边缘空间的“异托邦”的形象，并挪用空间的功能性探讨了法国评论家尼古拉 柏瑞欧( Nicolas Bourriaud) 所提倡的关系美学的概念。“空位”计划营造了一个具有社会性的模型和场所，把社会现实转换进来，并邀请不同角色的参与者介入对话，建立起多方位多角度的人际互动关系，传递出有关社会现实的信息。
