Nobuyoshi Araki: Sentimental Journey / Decadence in Paradise, 1971–2012 will be unveiled at Shanghai Himalayas Museum on September 23, 2013.Consisting of two parts, the exhibition features Sentimental Journey, the origin of Araki’s “I-photography (shi-shashin)”, and Decadence in Paradise, his most recent work to date. As Araki put it: Photography is a life. Through the monochromatic record of honey mooning with his wife Yoko, viewers will get an insight into the photographer’s inner world and his silent but passionate love towards his wife.

Nobuyoshi Araki is widely considered as a controversial photographer in modern history of
art. Born in 1940 in Minowa, Taitō-ward in downtown Tokyo, he took a photography courses in the department of engineering at Chiba University and graduated in 1963. Fresh out of photography training, Araki took his new wife, Yoko, on a honeymoon in 1971 during which he photographed Sentimental Journey, using a personal portrait of life as the vehicle to declare his individual artistic manifesto. “Sentimental Journey is my love, and also an act of determination on my part as a photographer. I photographed my honeymoon trip, so these are realist photographs.” One could say that with this first series, Araki truly stepped into his identity as an artist.

In Winter Journey, Araki recorded the illness and eventual death of his beloved wife Yoko. In Spring Journey, he photographed the final days of his cherished cat Chiro. Employing flat visual angles and seemingly simple order, Araki presents his refined and emotive side that lies beneath his unrestrained and uninhibited exterior.

In 2011following his recovery from surgery, Araki was faced with both his impending departure from the home that he had once shared with Yoko, and the tragedy of the earthquake-tsunami that had just struck Japan’s north-east region. In order to express his dual grief, here turned to his terrace from where he had once photographed the sky, and arranged toy figurines and flowering plants to create the series Decadence in Paradise.

Widely known as a productive photographer, Nobuyoshi Araki has published hundreds of catalogues, among which Sentimental Journey, Winter Journey, Spring Journey and Decadence
in Paradise, the four series to be put on display at Himalayas Museum, are hailed as the most representative and heart-stirring of his unique “I-photography”. Nobuyoshi Araki: Sentimental Journey / Decadence in Paradise, 1971–2012 will open to the public on September 24, 2013 and run through November 6.
