Gao Jie (born Gulangyu, Xiamen, 1979) furthered his studies in France after college graduation and now lives and works in Paris. His practice followed the French-style doubts of the world and philosophical interrogation, which is why his works has focused on the relations between existence and spirits of modern people, individual and society as well as illusion and reality. Out of Control and Space, are representative of a series developed around people, space as well as their inter-relations.

Presenting Gao’s first show in Beijing, “The World” will display his recent creations. It boasts a high visual impact, since Gao created his unique narrative language and aesthetic style, blending signs of the Pop system, and illustrating his recognition of a volatile world. In the Fall of the Paradise, a large-scale work Gao prepared for this exhibition, information on religious taboos of almost all religions of the world and the Holy Lands for pilgrims were collected. Based on the Ganges River, Jerusalem, Chinese Buddhism and Taoism, religious scenes such as the deluge and Armageddon are merged to break confinement brought about by religions with a freedom of imagination. In his eyes, “taboo is a battle between human nature and cultures - the part of human nature that cultures hold against; conflicts between super-ego and id; confrontation between common unconsciousness and original desires; and the fight between ‘morality’—the shaped human nature and ‘nature’—the desires shaped by nature, a balance reached in history under the influence of nature.” The artist fostered a great sense of suppression with tangled black and white lines as well as overwhelming space, putting audience at the center of history, time and space, which implies that the “human nature” is the source of fights, conflicts and contradictions of the human world.

In this epic work, the narration technique resembles Google or the key word search in Wikipedia, linking us from one thing to another. The huge information imbedded and complex texts are also from Internet searches. This is “intertextuality” a term coined by tge French critic Malia Christie — to create another text based on one already existing. Gao Jie believes all creations lead to a predecessors’ experience. They are imitations, re-shaped or transformations of something already known. Like when Jorge Luis Borges says, “Each writer creates his own predecessor.” Standing on the predecessors’ shoulders, Gao creates an unbelievable world in his own mind with his unique Pop painting language.


高洁生于1979年中国厦门鼓浪屿,大学毕业后奔赴法国求学,现今工作和生活于巴黎。高洁的创作继承了法国式的对世界的质疑及哲学性的拷问,其创作始终关注于现代人的存在与精神、个人与社会、幻想与现实的关系,他的系列作品以《失控》和《空间》为代表,围绕人、空间和状态以及他们之间的相互关系而展开。

此次展览是高洁的创作第一次在北京亮相,“世界”系列将展出高洁的全新创作,高洁借用西方现当代艺术领域颇为流行的卡通涂鸦的表现形式,将波普系统下的符号形象和他对于纷繁的世界的认知糅合在一起创造出独特的叙事语言和美学风格,整个展览具有强烈的视觉冲击力。在高洁为展览所准备的大型作品“天堂坠落“中,艺术家搜集了当今世界几乎所有宗教流派的宗教禁忌以及朝圣的圣地的信息,以恒河流域,耶路撒冷,还有中国佛教、道教等各种教派的圣地的建筑为原型,揉合了大洪水,末日审判等宗教场景,把宗教所提出的禁忌一一用想象的自由去打破。在艺术家看来“禁忌是人性和文化的斗争,是文化所反对的人类的人性部分,是超我和本我的矛盾,是集体无意识和动物性的对抗,是“道德”这一“被编造的人性”与“本性”这一“被自然所塑造的欲望”之间的抗争,是历史与自然的磨合。”艺术家在空间的安排上用纠缠的黑白线条和铺天盖地的画面营造出巨大的空间压迫感, 把观众置于历史与时空的中心点之上,暗指“人性”是主宰整个人类世界斗争、矛盾、纠结的中心点。

在这幅史诗式的作品里,艺术家的叙事手法如同谷歌或是维基百科关键词搜索一样,让我们从一个内容跳跃式的链接到另一个内容; 而画面庞大的知识量和复杂的文本也都是来源于网络的搜索,这样的创作模式正是法国批评家米丽娅·克里斯蒂所提出的"文本互涉" (intertextuality)的方式,依据已知的一种文本去创造另一种文本。高洁认为任何形势的创作都必然会指涉前人的经验,都是对既有认知的模仿、改造或变形,如同博尔赫斯所说,"每一位作家创造了他自己的先驱者"。站在先驱者的肩膀上,高洁运用属于他自己的独特波普绘画语言为我们编制了一个艺术家脑中不可思议的世界。
