Hi Art-Joy Project is honored to announce that Zhao Yiqian Solo Exhibition Here. Not. Here will be held at Joy Art Space in 798 Art District from October 12th to November 5th, 2013.

Here, Not Here series is the consistent subject of Zhao Yiqian’s works, “Here, not here, is a status, a possibility. For example, I see a beam of light from my angle, but it can’t be perceived from your side, this is here/not here”, Zhao said. After his graduation from Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2006, Zhao Yiqian devoted himself into a contemporary artist’s life filled with busy creative works and exhibitions. The figure of human being seldom appears in his works. Instead, his works are congested with articles such as toys, clocks, electronic organs, doors, and windows, walls, which are quite common to be seen and usually ignored by us in daily life. Zhao Yiqian doesn’t mind people calling him “fetish”, collections of old clocks and other stuff often emerge in his works and exhibitions.

What Zhao truly focus on isn’t the “object” itself, but the story it carries about. “ Sitting in the restaurant, with this ordinary table, I would wonder who was eating on this table just a moment ago, what happened here beside the table. It actually carries quite abundant stories.” Just like this solo exhibition of Zhao Yiqian Here. Not. Here, with oil paintings on canvas plus installations, Zhao created three door, four walls, one piano and two windows, which link up the whole exhibition with exquisite ideas of Zhao. The three western style doors on one side of the wall have adopted the size of the original, one of which Zhao met in his way to Kashi, Xinjiang province. “ In Kashi, those or variegated or obsolete doors endure the polish of time, still standing there silently, shining brightly with their colors under the sun. People there are in a status quite alike those doors, which also experience the years yet live simply and crystally.” The status of people in Kashi is one long gone thing that Zhao Yiqian has been cherishing about in his works, the artist who was born in 1982 has profoundly experienced the explosive development of Chinese economy during his growing up, realizing that the expansion of people’s desire reduces happiness. The experience that Zhao Yiqian received a toy once belonging to his brother and which he was craving for in his childhood, feels like dreams fulfilled. This satisfaction happens less and less these days, richer material can’t raise people’s interest, and Zhao Yiqian starts to pay attention to the “object” settling through the time.

Chinese traditional aesthetics emphasizes a kind of “flowing time”- demonstrating the space in the flow of time, to which Zhao Yiqian’s works correspond. Zhao’s “object” is not a static fixed point; in fact, it’s a kind of flowing existence, carrying the progress how time was displayed. Zhao Yiqian is very sensitive to colors, the colors in his paintings is nothing less than abundant, but always revealing slight coolness. To portray the variegated door in his impression for Kashi, the artist takes initiative to tone down the colors, slowly displaying us the imagination about a place, a kind of life and an experience with calm and restrained colors. This creative progress is like an epiphany – intending to trace back the story of “time and space”, however suddenly understand ”Allthough time flows endlessly, life is in a moment” Like Zhu Liangzhi mentioned in the ‘Eternity in A Moment’, “Endless time and now, limitless space and here”, Zhao Yiqian created “ an ever playing piano, in an everlasting moment”. The past he wants to trace back, the present he wants to display, and the future in his imagination, is carried in the “object” that can be glimpsed in front of us. Zhao Yiqian creates a quiet space with them, inviting viewers to ponder.
