The exhibition is curated by Feng Boyi - Independent curator, artcritic, art director of He Xiangning Art Museum



The exhibition will showcase Fan Yaping's work in the past 10 years (2004 - 2014) including installations and paintings. 

Fan Yaping has for art a passionate, magnificent and weird imagination. Among this profusion of works that fill her studio, one finds multi-level viewpoint, multidimensional level works, such as the crystal maze installation, the fairy tales world of the boudoir, the quirky dolls, with their charm that looks more cultish than Barbie, and also the pretty girls cartoon about young girls growing up, as well as paintings with a German Expressionism flavor, prints, drawings, and so on. The large number of people, objects and landscapes installations, the subtle details of their attire, the derailed, rebellious psychology of the youth experience, constitute the main subject matter of this exhibition’s works. Thus in this exhibition site, with its extremely strange atmosphere that changes into an infinite imagination, pervades a narrow, shiny visual space that places the viewer into a psychological experience.

Fan Yaping is not only an artist who graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, she also has a PhD in psychology, and while working on her art she also endeavors to research and experiment the psychology of growing up girls. Fan Yaping's art is a combination of creativity and artistic education, in a multi-dimensional way , especially her "beautiful girl "series is not just now the popular so-called "anime aesthetics ", but behind every piece of work  there lies the character’s story and psychological process of growing up. So she can unconsciously find dolls, clothing, plants, etc., that relate directly to women, and show them with a refined elegance rather than with some grand narrative discourse. From the reality of her personal experience and her imagination, she uses fragments of paintings and tailored clothing for distraction, to indulge in her hobbies, ideals, and to echo and create a maze-like alienation effect, showing beautiful sorrow, femininity and even hurt charm.

In the series of works like the "Dream", "Angel's Secret Garden", "Angle Doll", she intentionally uses finished products and, the brush in her hand following her emotions, makes the work create a restless, twisted and split world –a surreal scene mixed with an horrific nightmare, the mostly bizarre and uncanny themes, with morphological wanton freedom , unconventional style, and the comparison between the three-dimensional molds and installations and the flat paintings, as well as specific girls, angels, small demons has a classical meaning, leading to ubiquitous innocence and forming an impulse and a rationality that the works need . I believe that the real inspiration cannot be interpreted. Fan Yaping works embody a taste of fanatic freedom and egotism, symbolizing her inner vision, as well as a kind of nostalgia, perseverance and hope.

展览将集中展示范娅萍2004至2014年10年间包含装置,油画,版画三个类别的作品,届时我们将随着作品一同走进艺术家精心打造的梦幻空间。

范娅萍对艺术有着充沛的激情和瑰丽、怪异的想象力。那些充斥在画室繁复的作品,有着多级的视点、多维的层面,既有水晶迷宫般的装置、闺房的童话世界,古怪精灵的玩偶,比芭比娃娃更邪典似的魅惑,也有以少女成长为主题的卡通美少女绘画,还有德国表现主义意味的油画、版画、素描等等。而大量人、物与景的装置,服饰的精微的细节,出轨的、反叛的、心理的青春体验,构成了这次展览作品的主要题材内容,使这次展览现场弥漫在极度诡异的氛围中变幻出无尽的想象,逼仄、闪亮的视觉空间将观者带入到了一种心理体验的境地。

范娅萍不仅仅是一位艺术家,本科、硕士毕业于广州美术学院,她还有着一个心理学博士的背景,在创作同时致力于少女成长心理学的研究、实验。她的艺术是一种创作与美育相结合的综合性、多维度方式,尤其是她的“美少女”系列作品,不仅仅是现在流行的所谓“动漫美学”,而是每一幅作品的背后,都伴随着作品角色成长的故事与心理过程。所以她能在日常的不经意中发现并表现着与女性直接相关的娃娃、服饰、植物等等,精制、优雅,绝非宏大的叙事话语。她是从现实的个人经历和想象中,利用绘画和剪裁服饰的片断去排遣、释怀她的爱好、理想,呼应和营造了迷宫似的间离效果,呈现出凄艳、阴柔,甚至伤害的意趣。

此次展出的《梦境》、《童话》、《Angle Doll》等系列装置作品,极具视觉冲击力,艺术家有意为之地通过现成品的装置、手中画笔的感觉,使作品产生出动荡、扭曲、分裂的世界—恐怖的梦魇混合在一起的超现实场景。题材与情节离奇怪诞,形态自由放肆,风格异常;而装置角色的立体感,特定的美少女、天使、小恶魔等形象又具有经典的意味,导致了无处不在的童心和创作过程中的冲动与理性。真正的灵感都是无法解读的,范娅萍的作品呈现出的癫狂般的自由和自我的趣味,正是象征着她内心的憧憬,以及她在现实喧嚣中的一种谴怀、坚守与希望。
