Recording is at the crux of Zhao Liang’s work. People often only notice the cold, cruel reality through his lens, but very little attention is given to the kind of ascetic mental qualities, which are also qualities projected by his creative approach. The ‘movement’ and ‘stillness’ of reality, and the ‘meditative’ and ‘agitated’ mental spaces, together constitute four dimensions of Zhao Liang’s work. Through unbounded possibilities of reducing reality to interrogating individual mental worlds, this artistic position distinguishes Zhao Liang’s work from the terrain of discourse covered by more-ordinary interventionist practices. This exhibition will be presenting the video work Bored Youth (2000) with mounted photographs in traditional Chinese painting to reveal distinctive contrasts and resonances. Together, from our tireless acts of recording and intervening, there is a deficiency in questions raised by the art context directed towards the foundation of formal creativity – Zhao Liang’s work proposes a method of opening up mental spaces with a kind of tragic meaning.
Zhao Liang: 1971 Born in Dandong, works and lives in Beijing. He graduated from Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in 1993. He is an independent documentary filmmaker as well as an artist in photography and video art.
Zhao Liang’s documentary films has been involved in various international film festivals, including: London Open City Docs Fest, Documenta Madrid (2012); Berlin International Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival (2011), Documentary Edge Auckland, Hong Kong International Film Festival (2010); Cannes Film Festival, Lisbon Doc Lisboa (2009); Locarno Film Festival (2008); Nantes’ 3 Continents Film Festival, International Nuremberg Human Rights Festival (2007); Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival (2005, 2006); Taiwan International Documentary Festival, International Independent Film Festival Buenos Aires (2002); Marseille International Documentary Festival (2001) etc..
Zhao Liang has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at local and international contemporary art institutions, including: Three Shadows +3 Gallery (Beijing), Three Shadows Photography Art Center (Beijing), Pekin Fine Arts (Beijing), L. A. Gallery (Frankfurt), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Chinese Arts Centre (Manchester), Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), National Museum of Fine Arts (La Paz), Stasiatiska Museum (Stockholm), Contemporary Arts Museum (Houston), Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (Helsinki), ICP (New York), The Japan Foundation Asia Center (Tokyo), etc..

纪录是赵亮创作的基础，而人们往往注意到他镜头下冰冷残酷的现实，鲜有关注他创作中那种近似苦行僧的精神特质以及这种精神特质所投射的创作态度。现实的“动”与“静”，精神空间的“冥想”与“躁动”，构成了赵亮创作的四维空间。通过最大可能的还原现实逼问个体的精神世界，这一艺术立场让赵亮的工作与干预性创作的一般讨论区别开来。此次个展展示的录像作品《无聊青年》（2000年）与用传统中国画装裱形式呈现的摄影作品一起构成了鲜明的反差和交响，与在我们这个从来不乏纪录和干预，却总是缺失对这种形式的创作基础进行发问的艺术语境里，赵亮的创作提供了一种悲剧意义上的开拓精神空间的方式。
赵亮: 1971年出生于辽宁省丹东市，1992年毕业于鲁迅美术学院，1993年至今工作并生活于北京。他是独立纪录片作者，摄影和录像艺术家。
赵亮的纪录片作品曾经入围众多重要的国际电影节，包括伦敦纪录片电影节、马德里国际纪录片电影节（2012年）；柏林国际电影节、香港国际电影节（2011年）；、奥克兰国际纪录片电影节、香港国际电影节（2010年）；戛纳电影节、里斯本国际纪录片电影节（2009年）；洛迦诺电影节（2007年、2008年）；南特三大洲电影节、纽伦堡国际人权电影节（2007年）；阿姆斯特丹国际纪录片电影节（2005年、2006年）；台湾国际纪录片双年展、布宜诺斯艾利斯独立电影节、米兰电影制作人电影节（2002年）；马赛国际纪录片电影节（2001年）等，并获得了很多重要奖项。
赵亮曾在国内外众多当代艺术机构举办过个展和群展，包括北京三影堂画廊、北京三影堂摄影艺术中心、北京艺门画廊、法兰克福L.A.画廊、明尼阿波利斯市渥克艺术中心、曼彻斯特华人艺术中心、马德里皇后索菲亚美术馆、柏林世界文化宫、玻利维亚拉巴斯国家美术馆、瑞典Stasiatiska美术馆、休斯顿当代艺术中心、赫尔辛基Kiasma当代美术馆、ICP国际摄影中心、日本基金会亚洲中心等。
